This blog post is actually from an email that I sent to my customers and subscribers on New Year’s Day of 2008. In the email, I discussed what it’s like to spend New Year’s Eve on the Coast of Colombia after spending New Year’s Eve 2007 in Colombia for the first time.
Here’s the email:
Last night, was the very first New Year’s Eve that I ever celebrated in Colombia.
I don’t know if it was a typical Colombian New Year’s Eve day or not. But it certainly was not a typical day for me. In fact, I probably did the craziest thing I ever did in my entire life yesterday.
I started the day off by taking my “novia” to the “circo” (circus). The “Circo de México” is here in Barranquilla, Colombia now.
The last act of the “circo,” involved several “tigres” including “un tigre blanco” (a white tiger). The show with the tigers was the typical tiger act that you would see at a circus in the U.S. A trainer making tigers jump through hoops, run around the stage, roar ferociously, etc.
But at the end of the circo something happened that would never take place in the U.S.
For 20,000 Colombians pesos (about $10 U.S.), the attendees of the “circo” were allowed to step on the show’s stage and take a picture with the “tigre blanco” (white tiger).
The “tigre blanco” was “muy grande.” My guess is that it weighed well over 500 pounds. It did have a chain around his neck and his trainer was standing close by. But I don’t think that the flimsy chain around the tiger’s neck or the frail looking trainer would have been enough to stop the ‘”tigre blanco” if it suddenly decided that a “humano” may be a rather appetizing meal.
So when my “novia” said that she wanted to take a picture with this ferocious looking feline, all I could think about was the recent news that I had read on the Net: The very unfortunate and fatal attacks by tigers at two different zoos.
“¿Estás loca?” I asked her. As if she didn’t know, I added “Mi amor, yo no quiero morirme.” (Sweetheart, I don’t want to die.)
But after I watched several small children take a picture with the “tigre blanco” and even pet the tiger’s ‘trasero’ (backside) and ‘cola’ (tail), I couldn’t let my “novia” think that I was a “cobarde” (coward).
Besides, with the way that the circus industry is regulated in America and the way people are so afraid of being sued in the U.S., this was not an opportunity that I could expect Wringling Brothers to bestow upon me in the future.
So with knees buckling, sweat dripping down my forehead, hands trembling, mouth dry as the “desierto’ (desert), I had a picture taken of the three of us: my “novia,” me, and the “tigre blanco.”
Unlike the brave “niños” that took a picture with the “tigre blanco” right before us, I elected not to pet the tiger’s “trasero” or touch it’s “cola.”
After the circo, some friends here invited us to their home last night for dinner. By midnight, we were celebrating the New Year in their neighborhood at an outdoors party in the street. It reminded me of the block parties that we use to have in New York City when I was a kid growing up.
But this party had lots of Salsa, Meringue, and Vallenato music.
There was no champagne bottle popping at last night’s New Year’s Eve party. Just the typical Colombian brands of cerveza: Aguila and Club Colombia. And, of course, plenty of Ron Medellin — the popular brand of Colombian rum.
How To Say Happy New Year In Spanish
At last night’s New Year’s Eve party, I also noticed that unlike my Latino friends in New York, everyone here in Barranquilla wished each other “Feliz Año!” instead of “Feliz Año Nuevo!”
I was the only one at the party saying “Feliz Año Nuevo!” Everyone else was saying “Feliz Año!”
Knowing that it is wise to do as Colombians when in Colombia, I caught on quickly. After I was wished “Feliz Año!” by about 20 different people, I suddenly switched and starting wishing people a “Feliz Año!”

You made some good points there. I did a search on the topic and hardly found any specific details on other sites, but then great to be here, seriously, thanks.
These lessons are always fun and educational for me. I like the realistic situations in which the stories are told. the use of Spanish key words with the meanings in the context is very helpful. The light, often funny approach is a great way to learn without the pain of a lengthy lesson. You have a good way with language that keeps me interested.
Muchas gracias
