One of the most frequently asked questions that I hear from Spanish-language learners is “how do I take my Spanish to the next level?”

And one of the most frequent answers is “make friends with someone who is a native Spanish speaker.”

That may be the right idea. But it doesn’t precisely hit the target.

I will explain why.

I have a friend here in Colombia who works out in the same “gimnasio” (gym) that I go to. He just started learning English and he has asked me to help him out with his English. And I do. Every chance that I get.

One Way To Take Your Spanish To The Next Level

But yesterday I noticed that there is something that I do when I am helping him with his English. I am not quite sure if I am doing it subconsciously or deliberately. But I always speak to him in a slow and clear manner. I overemphasize how words are enunciated, distinctly pronouncing each and every syllable, not only in the sounds that I produce but also in the way that I move my mouth. I am also careful to avoid using any slang or colloquialisms.

But that’s not how native English speakers really speak. And he will never learn how to sound like a native English speaker listening to me talk to him like he has a learning disability.

And if you have a friend that is a native Spanish speaker who is helping you with your Spanish, your friend may not be speaking to you the same way that she speaks to her native Spanish-speaking friends.

Of course, that may be because if she spoke to you in the same rapid manner, running syllables together, that she uses when she speaks to her native Spanish-speaking friends you would not understand her.

Nevertheless, if you speak Spanish in the way that she speaks to you in Spanish, then you’ll never sound just like a native Spanish speaker.

How To Take Your Spanish To The Next Level

Here’s a better idea. Instead of finding a friend that is a native Spanish speaker, find friends who are native Spanish speakers. Notice that I used the plural form: “friends” who are native Spanish “speakers.”

That way you’ll be able to experience how native Spanish speakers speak to each other. You will learn how to naturally enunciate like a native speaker. You’ll even learn how to make the same gestures that they make when speaking. You will also learn their slang and their common slayings.

I know it may be easier said than done. But one thing that you can do is try your local MeetUp.com group. Nearly every city in the U.S. — small or large — has a Spanish MeetUp.com group either in the same city or in a neighboring city. And many cities outside of the U.S. also has have Spanish-language MeetUp groups. They even have one here in Medellin, Colombia where English speakers help Spanish speakers with English and vice versa.
