From the desk of Patrick Jackson Medellín, Colombia
Hola amigo/amiga:
It was my first trip to Colombia. Cali, Colombia to be exact. I was no newbie to learning Spanish. I took pride in knowing that on my own I had learned hundreds and hundreds of Spanish words.
When the Colombian owner of the hostel, asked me in English “Where do you live (in the U.S.A.)?” I arrogantly interrupted her before she could complete her question and said Español, por favor (Spanish, please).
Being not just confident but cocky about my Spanish, I easily conjugated the Spanish verb vivir (to live) in the present tense in the “first person” and responded Vivo en Nueva York (I live in New York).
She could hear the boldness in my voice as I effortlessly conjugated the verb “vivir” in the present tense in the “third person” and asked, ¿Dónde vives tú? (Where do you live?)
Perhaps sensing it was time to teach this cocky foreigner a Spanish lesson she reeled me in by asking in Spanish , ¿Dónde vives en Nueva York? (Where do you live in New York?).
I took the bait immediately and correctly responded, Viví en Brooklyn y Queens y ahora vivo en The Bronx (I lived in Brooklyn and Queens and now live in The Bronx). Without hesitation, I made the mistake of proudly asking ¿Algo más? (Anything else?)
And that’s when she moved in for the kill! Using the Spanish verb vivir she bombarded me with questions such as:
¿Dónde has vivido? (Where have you lived?)
¿Dónde estás viviendo? (Where are you living?)
¿Dónde vivías antes? (Where did you used to live before?)
¿Dónde vivirías? (Where would you live?)
¿Dónde habrías vivido? (Where would you have lived?)
¿Dónde vas a vivir? (Where are you going to live?)
¿Dónde vivirás? (Where will you live?)
¿Dónde habrás vivido? (Where will you have lived?)
¿Dónde tu familia quiere que vivas? (Where does your family want you to live?”)
My Spanish came to a screeching halt . . . And so did my confidence.
Sure, I had mastered conjugating Spanish verbs in the present tense and even the simple past tense (preterit). But when it came time to having a conversation with a native Spanish speaker about any other verb tense, I was a sitting duck:
With my tail between my legs and my confidence completely shattered, I retreated to my room. Never to speak another word of Spanish to the hostel owner during my first trip to Colombia.
My Rude Awakening
Thankfully, some good came from this embarrassing experience. I realized, unless I learned to master conjugating Spanish verbs in all the tenses and categories, I’d never be able to confidently have a Spanish conversation with a native speaker. And I’d certainly never become fully conversational in Spanish without Spanish verb mastery.
When I returned from my trip to Cali, Colombia, I spent the next couple of years fanatically reading Spanish verb conjugation charts, studying Spanish verb books and paying Spanish instructors to drill me with Spanish verb conjugation exercises. I even made my own flash cards – using index cards – to create my own Spanish verb conjugation drills.
Eventually, I mastered conjugating Spanish verbs in all the tenses. By the time I moved to Barranquilla, Colombia in 2007, and then Medellin, Colombia in 2008, I was so good at conjugating Spanish verbs that I could easily detect when a native Spanish speaker made a Spanish-verb-conjugation error.
Believe it or not . . .
> The most daunting obstacle standing in the way of your mastery of the Spanish language is not learning Spanish vocabulary. When it comes to learning to speak conversational Spanish, the greatest hurdle you’ll have to overcome is knowing how to conjugate Spanish verbs. Without it, you’ll never speak Spanish with complete confidence – let alone be able to speak Spanish fluently.
> I’m not suggesting if you fail to master conjugating Spanish verbs, a native Spanish speaker is going to be as brutal with your Spanish as the hostel owner was during my first trip to Colombia. What I’m saying is that if you do not become proficient at conjugating Spanish verbs, you’ll never become fully conversational in Spanish - and certainly not fluent.
> Fortunately, you don’t have to spend the next couple of years fanatically reading Spanish verb conjugation charts, studying Spanish verb books and paying Spanish instructors hundreds and even thousands of dollars to drill you with Spanish verb conjugation exercises.
There’s an easier way . . .
