Today, I want to talk about how to express in Spanish what you would do if you were to win the lottery. I can think of 3 similar ways in English to express this same idea or thought:
1. “If I were to win the lottery, I would buy a mansion.” (I have heard grammarians refer to this as the “unreal” conditional which is used to express unreal, impossible or improbable situations.
)
2.) If I win the lottery, I will buy a mansion.
(In English this is known as the “real” conditional because it is used for real – or possible – situations. Being the optimist that I am, this one would have to be my favorite.)
3. ) If I had won the lottery, I would have bought a mansion.
(I have heard grammarians call this one the “past” conditional because it only concerns past situations with hypothetical results.)
Today, I want to limit the topic to using only the third technique to express a hypothetical situation.
How To Say In Spanish What You Would Have Done If You Had Won The Lottery
In Spanish, in order to express a condition that is contrary to a fact or situation in past time we must use the past perfect subjunctive in the “si” or “if” clause, and the conditional perfect in the main clause. Por ejemplo
(for example):
Si yo hubiera ganado la lotería, habría comprado una mansión. (If I had won the lottery, I would have bought a mansion.)
Of course, you can switch the order and say:
Yo habría comprado una mansión, si hubiera ganado la lotería. (I would have bought a mansion, if I had won the lottery.)
