Today, I noticed something “muy raro” (very strange) in the “supermercado” (supermarket) here in Medellín, Colombia.
In Latin America, Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes (the cereal) are not called “Frosted Flakes.” They are called “Zucaritas.”
“Zucaritas” is apparently a shortened form of the word “azucaritas” which literally means “little sugars.”
Today, I also noticed that in Latin America, Kellogg’s Coco Krispies are not called “Coco Crispies.” They are called “Choco Krispis.”
But the other American cereals maintain their U.S. names, such as Lucky Charms, Trix, Froot Loops, Corn Flakes, etc.
While we are on the topic of “cereal” — I have SEIS (6) words related to “cereal” to share with you. By the way, the word “cereal” is spelled the same in both English and Spanish.
How To Say Oat Meal In Spanish
1. Avena – oatmeal, oats
Desayuné un vaso de jugo de naranja y un tazón de avena con leche.

By the way, in Colombia and many other parts of Latin America, “avena” or oatmeal is made into a
non-alcoholic drink that you can drink at any time of the day.

I like that brand but I prefer to make it “casera” (home-made) using “hojuelas de avena” (oatmeal flakes), “leche” (milk), azucar (sugar), and “canela” (cinnamon).
