The books that I used to learn Spanish taught me phrases such as:

No voy a hacer eso otra vez.
(I am not going to do that again.)

No lo hagas otra vez.
(Don’t do it again)

No lo comieron de nuevo.
(They did not eat it again.)

But from living in Colombia for eight years, I have learned that native Spanish speaker often express “doing something again” or “not doing something again” using a different method.

And I have a friend from Argentina whose a Spanish professor and he also said the method that I learned from my Spanish books is also not the most common way to express “doing something again” or “not doing something again.

Instead of using phrases such as “otra vez” and “de nuevo” to express “doing something again” he would use the verb “volver” to express the same thought. And that’s also how Colombianos normally express the same thought — by using the verb “volver.

Por ejemplo . . .

Yo no vuelvo a hacerlo.
(I am not going to do it again.

No lo volvieron a comer.

Volviste a ir al circo.

A propósito (by the way), the verb “volver” means to “return” — and so does the Spanish verb “regresar.”

So one way of thinking is that “No lo vuelvas a hacer!” actually means “Do not return to doing it!”
I know that translation sounds strange to our Gringo ears. I guess some things in Spanish are just better off without translating literally.

Fuiste al circo de nuevo.
(You went to the circus again.)
