” But since the Spanish pronoun “le” can mean “he,” “her,” and the formal word for “you,” (usted) without more details if I just said “le gusta cuando le hablo español,” your question to me in English might be “Who IS IT PLEASING TO when you speak Spanish?” The most precise answer to that question would not just be “her” but “to her.
” Since you asked “who is it PLEASING TO?” And the Spanish word “a” means “to.” So when we add “a ella,” we clarify or emphasize that it is “pleasing TO HER” as opposed to “pleasing TO HIM” or “pleasing TO YOU” (formal Spanish word you – i.e. “usted”) I wanted to share this mistake with you because I cannot count the times that I have heard English speakers say “Ella le gusta” when they should have said “A ella le gusta.” Or they said “él le gusta” when they should have said “A él le gusta.”
